Board Member

Health Mentor

ROLE DESCRIPTION                                                                          

Job title:                       Volunteer Health Mentor

Reporting to:                Development Officer

Overall purpose:         To facilitate mentor groups encouraging participantsto make and maintain healthy changes in their lifestyle

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake initial training (approx 35 hours over several months)
  • To facilitate mentor group meetings with a partner, ensuring that the core programme is covered
  • To help increase participants’ knowledge about their health/condition to achieve a healthier lifestyle
  • To support participants to have greater independence and well-being in the community and reduce their likelihood of admission into hospital
  • To support group participants to be more able to make informed choices about reducing / controlling risk factors for heart disease or type 2 diabetes.
  • To liaise with the Development Officer regarding any problems arising within a mentor group
  • To carry out appropriate administration procedures maintaining client confidentiality ie ensuring participants to the programme complete initial equal opportunity forms and final evaluation forms
  • To facilitate group discussion ensuring that participants are supported to participate
  • To inform group participants about Walk with Braveheart and Braveheart Plus when the mentoring group comes to an end
  • From time to time, assist the Development Officer when giving talks in the local community or at local and national conferences
  • To attend the six-weekly health mentor meetings as far as possible

Role Profile

Skills:                Must successfully complete the health mentors training course and participate in any further training. Good communication and organisational skills are desirable

Experience:      No previous experience is necessary as full training will be given.

Abilities:            Ability to mix with a cross section of the general public and vulnerable adults

Please note:    This post requires you to become a member of the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) scheme.

Walk Leader

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Job title:                       Volunteer Walk Leader

Reporting to:                Walking Development Officer

Overall purpose:         To research and lead suitable free short health walks (1/2 mile to 3 miles)

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake initial and ongoing training (Braveheart induction, walk leader training course, first aid course and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training course – CPR)
  • To provide a safe and welcoming environment to all walkers
  • To lead safe and enjoyable local walks for people of all ages and abilities, bearing in mind the information provided at the training course ie use of the cue card messages
  • To encourage walkers to aim to walk independently as well as taking part in the Walk with Braveheart programme
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and motivate people to take up walking as a form of physical recreation
  • To help walkers tailor health walking to meet their individual needs
  • To carry out appropriate administration procedures maintaining client confidentiality ie completion of the walk register and the health questionnaire
  • To encourage all walkers to take part in other health related activities organised by Braveheart
  • From time to time, assist the Walking Development Officer when giving talks in the local community
  • As far as possible, to attend the six-weekly walk leader meetings
  • To keep up-to-date with walk leading by reading the information provided by Paths for All on a regular basis

  • Ability to mix with a cross section of the general public and vulnerable adults
  • Ability to research and risk assess (with support from the Walking Development Officer) walks independently and as part of a team

Fundraiser

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Job title:                     Braveheart Volunteer Fundraiser
Reporting to:             Braveheart Fundraiser
Overall purpose:       To work as part of the Fundraising team raising vital funds for Braveheart

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To be committed to the aims and objectives of the Braveheart Association
  • To promote the health promotion message of Braveheart
  • To employ fundraising initiatives to raise awareness of Braveheart within the local community
  • To undertake initial and ongoing training and updating
  • To carry out in a conscientious manner pre-arranged voluntary commitments

Role Requirement Profile

Skills:             Caring and interpersonal skills
Experience:    No previous experience is necessary as full training will be given.
Abilities:

  • Ability to mix with a cross section of the general public
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
